There are 47 national parks in Norway. Having the Ånderdalen National Park on the island of Senja makes all the difference!
Nearly 85% of Norwegian national parks are made up of steep mountain peaks. But in Senja the park is basically flat, which facilitates your unforgettable journey.
The park is located in the south of the island and has an extension of 125km². More than 90 species of birds live in the park. The landscape is composed of forests with trees of more than 600 years old and pine trees centuries old twisted by the harsh winter.
Along its river, there are lush forests of birch in the lowlands. Feel free to pick wild fruits and mushrooms that the park offers in its unforgiving nature! Senja Experience takes you to enjoy the authentic beauty of Ånderdalen in order to contribute once again to your journey of unforgettable experiences on the island of Senja.
Close to the island you will also find Polar Park. It is a polar zoo located in the commune of Bardu that displays animals in their natural habitat. The park has one of the largest proportions of area per animal in the world and is considered the most northerly zoo in the world!
Although it is not a tour made by Senja Experience, feel free to greet grizzly bears, lynx, wolves, gluttons (wolverines), moose, musk oxen (muskox) and red deer. If you are lucky you can still feed the little white girls with the help of the veterinarians on duty.
Lookouts and tourist hotspots:
Skrolsvik – is an old German fort built by the Norwegian army and closed in 1989. The coastline around the fort offers wonderful sunsets. Nearby there is an antique shop (Gammelbutikken) and café, which offers a good range of artisanal products, souvenirs, but no meaningless tourist merchandise. Perfect for a short stop when you are strolling through Senja, with delicious waffles, extremely friendly service, and goodies made locally to accompany your coffee.
Bergsbotn – is a belvedere surrounded by fabulous mountains at the mouth of a lush, breathtaking fjord! Right from the top of the mountain, a wooden ramp with bars around it allows the most distracted tourist to be fascinated by such indescribable beauty! This is one of those places that must be seen to be believed! Words cannot describe Bergsbotn.
Tungeneset – another must-see on Senja! A wooden walkway by the sea with stunning views of mountains with sharp peaks. It is a meditative place, which transmits calm. The noise of the sea waves and the stunning view of the mountains bring us an instant connection to ourselves, the sacred, and the divine.
